The Compelling Case for Treating Autism with Marijuana
May 8 2017, 5:00am Caitlin Murphy
...They then reached out to Mieko Hester-Perez, an American medical cannabis advocate
who's been vocal about using it to treat her son, Joey, for autism. Dar had seen a 2009 clip online of Hester-Perez being interviewed on Good Morning America,
where she had also mentioned that a clinical study was necessary to gain legitimacy of the treatment, which was incredibly controversial at the time. Hester-Perez was an ideal third addition to support their goals and bring international interest to the need
for a clinical study.
Ultimately, the three women were unable to raise enough money to support a new study, but they set aside the $11,000 raised to help benefit future research. As a result of their efforts, they met Dedi Meiri, an Israeli researcher at the Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Cannabinoid Research who is at the forefront of studying medical marijuana. Meiri had already been gathering data from people treating other conditions with medical cannabis, and is now tracking more than 70 people using it to treat autism in Israel.
...As they continue to recruit more people and gather more information, Hester-Perez believes the data will help support physicians who diagnose autism. "It's one of the most groundbreaking and unconventional treatment options for families," she says. "And it's becoming the treatment of choice—with or without a physician's guidance. Read More

The Journey of Joey and Mieko Hester-Perez: Where Are They Now?
in 2011, we covered the story of an incredible and dedicated mother, Mieko Hester-Perez, and her son, Joey. Joey was diagnosed with a severe form of autism at 16 months old. You may have seen their journey featured on a number of shows such as NBC, CBS, ABC’s 20/20, and Vice Media, just to mention a few, as well as internationally in several countries. We wondered what was happening in their lives now, so we reached out to Mieko, and here is what we learned.
After co-founding Unconventional Foundation for Autism (UF4A.org), an informational site that is intended to raise awareness and support for families afflicted with autism spectrum, the modern day “warrior mom” didn’t stop there. Combining her 20 years of legal experience, 15 years of special education knowledge, and first-hand experience living with a loved one afflicted with autism, Mieko continues to give generously to the industry.

Doctors Prescribe Cannabis and Research For Autism
Calming Cannabis Medicine for Joey
Mieko Hester-Perez chose the unconventional cannabis route when she was told her son Joey might not last the year. The greatest threat to her son’s well-being seemed to be the 13 FDA-approved medications
he was prescribed. Side effects from the ineffective, legal drugs included facial ticks, seizures, and liver damage, and Joey was also experiencing dangerous weight loss.
After she gave her fragile, uncommunicative 10-year-old boy cannabis medicine, not only was Joey able to put on weight, but he began to play with his toys and smile. Soon after, he began making regular eye contact, which is always a challenge with autism.
Six years after his six-month-terminal prognosis, Joey was instead living a happy life, thanks to cannabis and his mom, who went on to assist with the development of “Joey’s Strain,” a cannabis variety for autism’s core symptoms.
[Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly mentioned that Mieko Hester-Perez used cannabis cookies for her son Joey.]
