Global Healthcare Conversations with Mieko Perez: World Autism Awareness Day

During the month of April, Autism Awareness month, my cannabis and autism parents will take over my blogs to provide our viewers with a front row view of being a special needs parent in 2021.  Today, we are starting with gratitude. I am grateful to have been my son Joey’s mother, even on the days when I questioned my faith. The day I received this email, it was clear that my son had been training me for one of the most rewarding titles I hold today, an autism advocate. Read full blog on

Our global connection to cannabis as a viable treatment option for persons on the spectrum

Every morning, I start my day with a cup of coffee as I sort my emails from healthcare professionals ,social workers, attorneys, and families in need according to time zones…so basically, I wake up between 4 to 9 hours behind by default of living in California.  When you are a family in need of answers, time becomes the ultimate waiting game. So, I became the parent I needed when I had to make this same choice for my child on the autism spectrum 11 years ago when he was 9 years old.

The 6th sense I have made my “superpower” is “hearing” my emails, in the same tone I had when a community of cannabis pioneers answered my calls and gave me more time with my son. Every day I pay it forward honoring my son Joey’s legacy, as I open my emails the global journey begins...Read full blog on

I had begun, supporting medical teams several years ago and their patients via HIPPA compliant confidential consults reaching well over 700 consumer navigation plans. The primary goal was to provide consumer-centered outcomes to promote healthy conversations with medical professionals. Read full blog on

Sep 26, 2019 - Mieko Hester-Perez wasn’t planning on being an advocate for cannabis growing up in Orange County, California.

September 26, 2019 By Andrew Ward

Mieko Hester-Perez shares how her son’s needs led her to medical cannabis activism.

Mieko Hester-Perez wasn’t planning on being an advocate for cannabis growing up in Orange County, California. That is, until life put her on a path she never otherwise would have embarked on.

Cannabis was never an option for Mieko, as a child or as an adult. The legal services professional comes from a conservative family and embraces such beliefs to this day. Her extended family represents several slices of conservative values. They include three pastors, numerous uncles in the LAPD (some serving in the narcotics division), and her brother, a high-ranking firefighter.

While remaining conservative, Mieko Hester-Perez has fully embraced the progressive cannabis movement. Over the past decade, she has used her upbringing and beliefs to introduce an array of people to medical cannabis while advocating for families like her own...

The Compelling Case for Treating Autism with Marijuana

May 8 2017, 5:00am Caitlin Murphy

...They then reached out to Mieko Hester-Perez, an American medical cannabis advocate who's been vocal about using it to treat her son, Joey, for autism. Dar had seen a 2009 clip online of Hester-Perez being interviewed on Good Morning America, where she had also mentioned that a clinical study was necessary to gain legitimacy of the treatment, which was incredibly controversial at the time. Hester-Perez was an ideal third addition to support their goals and bring international interest to the need for a clinical study.

Ultimately, the three women were unable to raise enough money to support a new study, but they set aside the $11,000 raised to help benefit future research. As a result of their efforts, they met Dedi Meiri, an Israeli researcher at the Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Cannabinoid Research who is at the forefront of studying medical marijuana. Meiri had already been gathering data from people treating other conditions with medical cannabis, and is now tracking more than 70 people using it to treat autism in Israel.

...As they continue to recruit more people and gather more information, Hester-Perez believes the data will help support physicians who diagnose autism. "It's one of the most groundbreaking and unconventional treatment options for families," she says. "And it's becoming the treatment of choice—with or without a physician's guidance. The Journey of Joey and Mieko Hester-Perez: Where Are They Now?

by Nanette Porter

in 2011, we covered the story of an incredible and dedicated mother, Mieko Hester-Perez, and her son, Joey. Joey was diagnosed with a severe form of autism at 16 months old. You may have seen their journey featured on a number of shows such as NBC, CBS, ABC’s 20/20, and Vice Media, just to mention a few, as well as internationally in several countries. We wondered what was happening in their lives now, so we reached out to Mieko, and here is what we learned.

After co-founding Unconventional Foundation for Autism (, an informational site that is intended to raise awareness and support for families afflicted with autism spectrum, the modern day “warrior mom” didn’t stop there. Combining her 20 years of legal experience, 15 years of special education knowledge, and first-hand experience living with a loved one afflicted with autism, Mieko continues to give generously to the industry.
